Bountiful zoning code

14-19-107 NONCOMPLYING SIGNS

Unofficial copy. It may be out of date. Not legal or zoning advice. Zoning rules change, and only the city or county can say for sure what is allowed on a property. Confirm with the city or county planning department before you buy, sign or build. The official Bountiful code is at https://www.bountiful.gov/197/Land-Use-Code. Text pulled 2026-10-19 from this source. Use tables don't copy cleanly. Check the official code for any table. Tables (like use tables) may not copy cleanly, so check any table against the official code. Confirm anything here with Bountiful planning before you rely on it.
A. Regulation, containment, and elimination. In order to minimize confusion and unfair competitive disadvantage to those businesses which are required to satisfy the current Sign Code standards, the City intends to apply firm regulation of existing nonconforming signs with a goal of their eventual elimination. This goal shall be achieved by strictly construing limits on change, expansion, alteration, abandonment, and restoration. Excluding normal maintenance and repair, a noncomplying sign shall not be moved, altered, or enlarged unless it is brought into compliance with this Chapter. The following exceptions shall be permitted: 1. A face change in a noncomplying sign that does not encroach onto a public rightof-way or easement, and that is not deemed a public safety hazard by the Planning Director or City Engineer. 2. A copy change in a noncomplying permanent sign which was originally approved by the City with a changeable copy feature. B. Abandonment. Within forty-five (45) calendar days after vacation of an existing business, a noncomplying sign shall be removed unless the property owner informs the City in writing of his intention to re-use the sign. The property owner shall be allowed one (1) year to establish a new use on the site. If the property owner does not take action within fourteen (14) days of written notice of violation, or if the signs are not re-used within the one (1) year period, the City may abate the signs and recover any and all costs. An abandoned sign shall not regain any legal noncomplying status later, even if the original business reoccupies the property.
